Kaiteur Falls - Amazon Rainforest - Guyana, South America

This summer (2002), I was in Guyana for the wedding of one of my cousins. While there, I took the liberty to visit Kaiteur falls, a most beautiful and spectacular water falls in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

It is a common belief that the amazon rainforest is located in the northern part of Brazil.

"[The Amazon rainforest] is bounded by the Guiana Highlands to the north, the Andes Mountain Ranges to the west, the Brazilian central plateau to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east."

In reality, 90% of the amazon rainforest is found in Brazil, while another 10% is shared between Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Kaiteur falls is located in the deep recesses of the amazon rain forest. It can only be accessed by small planes and helicopters. It is possible to hike to Kaiteur, but the expedition usually takes three days from Georgetown, the capital of Guyana.

Upon arriving at Kaiteur, I had the opportunity to see the falls. It was one of the most magnificent realizations of the power of mother nature. The vicinity of the falls was completely untouched by civilization. There were no guard rails nor any litter on the ground.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so without much further ado, here are some pictures that I took while at Kaiteur.

Picture from a ledge. Notice that there isn't anything keeping me from falling off! Scary, huh?

Another picture from a different angle. =)

If I wanted to be a photographer, this would certainly be in my resume.

I don't know - Everything seems a bit muddled in this picture. But I like it nonetheless.

Absolutely exquisite.

Divine. Someone, keep me from falling over in delight.

I was right at the edge here. Those were the brambles that were sticking up from the rocks at the edge.

Picture from the side and from further back. My mom grabbed me after I took that last picture and said "STAY AWAY FROM THE EDGE!! YOU MIGHT FALL AND THEN WHAT WILL YOUR DAD SAY?" He he. Got to love your parents ('specially when they fork over the dough and take you to see this!)

I thought that this would make a very pretty background for some text on a CD cover or something. Feel free to take it and use it.

Absolutely breath taking. There is not a word in the English dictionary (or in any man made language) to describe this view of heaven.

I forgot the history behind the rock shaped like a face, but it has something to do with the natives. Perhaps I'll be motivated one day to research it and put it on my site. Until then though, you do the research yourself.

This place wasn't at Kaiteur falls, but we stopped at this island anyway. Its a resort a few miles from Kaiteur falls. Nice sandy beach (artificial). But there's a beautiful mist way out around the bend in the river.

And so ends the pictures from Kaiteur falls. I hope you enjoyed looking at these picture as much as I enjoyed taking them. I doubt that you did though. I've never seen such a wonderful sight in my life. If you ever plan on going somewhere, Kaiteur falls wouldn't be a mistake; I can promise you that.
